Prof Chen Yu Hai Eric
Prof Eric Chen will be starting as Professor in the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health (Orygen) at the University of Melbourne.
He was former Senior Consultant and Professor of Psychiatry in the Institute of Mental Health and Nanyang Technical University LKC Medicine, Singapore. Prof Eric Chen had also served as Chair Professor in Psychiatry and Head in the Department of Psychiatry at Hong Kong University.
Prof Eric Chen received his medical training at Oxford and Edinburgh Universities. Prof Eric Chen has been leading the development of the Early Detection and Intervention Services in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region since 2001. Prof Eric Chen and his team have carried out controlled studies of first episode psychosis with long-term follow-up. They explored the role brain cognitive mechanisms such as memory, language processes in psychosis outcome, as well as interventional approaches to relapse prevention and cognitive enhancement through exercise He was recipient of the 2014 Richard Wyatt Award from the International Association for Early Intervention in Mental Health (IEPA, https://iepa.org.au/).
Prof Eric Chen had served as Vice-President of the International Early Psychosis Association (IEPA) and in the Board of Directors and Chair of the communication committee in the Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS). He also founded the Asian Network for Early Psychosis (ANEP). He was immediate past Chairman of the Asian College of Schizophrenia Research. EC was Chairman of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists. Prof Eric Chen had been Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School, and the Institute of Mental Health, Singapore. Prof Eric Chen has also founded the highly successful Master degree course in Psychological Medicine at the Hong Kong University.
EC and his team’s work have been published in over 400 professional journals and book chapters, which appeared in leading international journals such as the British Medical Journal, the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Nature. EC has also
published three books on early Intervention in psychiatry (Oxford University Press, Hong Kong University Press).
